Windfall — literally Indirect Wealth (偏财, piān cái) — is the Ten God for the element your Day Master controls, in the same polarity. For a 甲 Day Master it is 戊 (Wù, Yang Earth).

What you govern, indirectly: windfalls and opportunities — quick in, quick out.

Every Ten God is defined relative to the Day Master, the stem of your day of birth — that page explains the reference point; this one goes deeper on a single relation. The tables and the example below are computed at build time by the engine behind our free BaZi calculator, not written by hand.

Why is it called Indirect Wealth?

财 in a BaZi chart is not money. It is the element your Day Master controls — whatever responds when you act on it. 偏 means off-centre, and marks the same-polarity form: for a 甲 day, 戊. The literal Indirect Wealth is accurate and tells an English reader very little, so we call it Windfall, after the kind of gain it describes: irregular, caught by moving rather than kept by tending. Windfall feeds Pressure and checks Insight. The manuals notice both, because an opportunity chased hard tends to bring its own load.

Among the Ten Gods, Windfall checks Insight and feeds Pressure; it is checked by Peer and fed by Output. These follow from the same element cycles, in the same polarity, and hold for every Day Master.

How is Windfall worked out?

Start from your Day Master’s element and find the element it controls in the controlling cycle. That element has a yang stem and a yin stem. The one whose polarity matches your Day Master’s is Windfall; the other is Steady Wealth.

Count along the ten stems from the Day Master, counting it as the first, and Windfall is always the fifth stem, whichever Day Master you start from.

A Ten God shows up in two places: as a visible stem on top of a pillar, and as a hidden stem stored inside a branch. The last column lists every branch that stores this stem and at which layer; the main qi counts for most. Hidden-stem tables follow our published conventions.

What does Windfall look like in a real chart?

Take the chart we publish for Bruce Lee (1940–1973), cast by the same engine from the recorded birth time. The Day Master is 甲 (Jiǎ, Yang Wood). Windfall appears 4 times: 戊 (Wù, Yang Earth) hidden in the year branch 辰, as its main qi; 戊 (Wù, Yang Earth) hidden in the day branch 戌, as its main qi; the hour stem, 戊 (Wù, Yang Earth); 戊 (Wù, Yang Earth) hidden in the hour branch 辰, as its main qi. Against a Yang Wood Day Master, 戊 (Yang Earth) reads as Windfall: Earth is controlled by Wood, both yang.

Where the birth time comes from, and how strong that source is, is set out on the Bruce Lee case page. Finding Windfall in a well-known chart explains nothing about why the person became known; each case page has a section on where the chart does not fit the life.

How do you read Windfall?

Some people tell the story of their best years through a single opportunity they saw before anyone else did. Others distrust that story and trust only what accrues slowly. Windfall is the chart’s word for the first way of getting things: by noticing and moving. A prominent Windfall does not mean money is coming, and nothing on this page is financial advice. What it records is a way of relating to what you can take hold of — restless in steady work, awake in a market. Whether you are any good at it, the chart cannot tell you. The same people often feel guilty about it, or envy the patience of the other kind. If that sounds familiar, the question worth asking is whether the discomfort comes from playing badly, or from playing a game that was built for someone else.
