Clock time is a convention; a BaZi chart is set by the sun. Your birth time is first resolved against the historical time zone of your birthplace, including any daylight saving in force that day. Singapore and Malaysia, for instance, ran on UTC+7:30 until the end of 1981. It is then shifted by longitude, four minutes per degree, and by the equation of time. The correction is shown in those three parts, so you can check the sum yourself.
The month pillar turns at the solar terms, not on the first of the month, and the year pillar at the Beginning of Spring, around February 4. For a birth between 23:00 and midnight, the day pillar stays with the calendar day: the same-day late Zi convention.
Every convention is written out on the charting method page. Anything we got wrong and fixed is logged under corrections.
BaZi (八字) means “eight characters.” Your birth moment is written as four pillars — each carrying one stem, one branch.
A birthday in early February may still belong to the previous year’s pillar.
Clock time is a political convention — birthplace can shift the hour pillar by a full branch. Full rules on the charting method page.
Every convention is documented. Nothing here is guessed, and nothing changes between visits.
