Edge — literally Hurting Officer (伤官, shāng guān) — is the Ten God for the element your Day Master produces, in the opposite polarity. For a 甲 Day Master it is 丁 (Dīng, Yin Fire).

What you produce, with an edge on it: talent that lands accurately, and sometimes cuts.

Every Ten God is defined relative to the Day Master, the stem of your day of birth — that page explains the reference point; this one goes deeper on a single relation. The tables and the example below are computed at build time by the engine behind our free BaZi calculator, not written by hand.

Why is it called Hurting Officer?

伤 is to injure and 官 is the officer: Hurting Officer. The officer being hurt is not you. It is the stem that stands for Structure in your chart. Edge is what your Day Master produces in the opposite polarity — for a 甲 day, 丁 — and 丁 checks 辛, which is exactly the stem that reads as Structure for 甲. So the name describes a collision between your expression and the rules you live under; the manuals call it 伤官见官, Edge meeting Structure. We call it Edge because that is what the talent has. It lands accurately, and it can cut.

Among the Ten Gods, Edge checks Structure and feeds Steady Wealth; it is checked by Support and fed by Rival. These follow from the same element cycles, in the same polarity, and hold for every Day Master.

How is Edge worked out?

Start from your Day Master’s element and find the element it produces in the generating cycle. That element has a yang stem and a yin stem. The one whose polarity is opposite to your Day Master’s is Edge; the other is Output.

Count along the ten stems from the Day Master, counting it as the first, and Edge is the fourth stem for a yang Day Master but the second for a yin one. The stems alternate yang and yin, so a stem of the opposite polarity has no fixed distance.

A Ten God shows up in two places: as a visible stem on top of a pillar, and as a hidden stem stored inside a branch. The last column lists every branch that stores this stem and at which layer; the main qi counts for most. Hidden-stem tables follow our published conventions.

What does Edge look like in a real chart?

Take the chart we publish for Bruce Lee (1940–1973), cast by the same engine from the recorded birth time. The Day Master is 甲 (Jiǎ, Yang Wood). Edge appears 2 times: the month stem, 丁 (Dīng, Yin Fire); 丁 (Dīng, Yin Fire) hidden in the day branch 戌, as its residual qi. Against a Yang Wood Day Master, 丁 (Yin Fire) reads as Edge: Fire is produced by Wood, one yang and one yin.

Where the birth time comes from, and how strong that source is, is set out on the Bruce Lee case page. Finding Edge in a well-known chart explains nothing about why the person became known; each case page has a section on where the chart does not fit the life.

How do you read Edge?

Most people can name a moment when they said the accurate thing in the wrong room. Edge is the chart’s name for that pattern: talent that arrives at an angle and is not softened on the way out. The old verdicts on it were harsh, and English writing tends to inherit them as a warning. Read as a relation, it is simpler. Your output and the structures around you are in tension, and the tension can become work or damage depending on where you put it. A chart with a strong Edge in a job that rewards precision reads differently from the same chart in an office that runs on tact, and the chart alone cannot tell you which office you are in. The next time a sentence is ready before the room is, the question is not whether to say it but where.
