Structure — literally Direct Officer (正官, zhèng guān) — is the Ten God for the element that controls your Day Master, in the opposite polarity. For a 甲 Day Master it is 辛 (Xīn, Yin Metal).
What governs you, legitimately: rules, office, the kind of constraint you consent to.
Every Ten God is defined relative to the Day Master, the stem of your day of birth — that page explains the reference point; this one goes deeper on a single relation. The tables and the example below are computed at build time by the engine behind our free BaZi calculator, not written by hand.
Why is it called Direct Officer?
官 is an office, the post of an official, and 正 marks it as the proper form: an element that controls yours in the opposite polarity — for a 甲 day, 辛. That pairing of yin and yang is the whole difference from Pressure. It still constrains you, but the constraint has give in it, the way a rule you understand has give. The literal Direct Officer is accurate. We call it Structure because what it names is less a person in charge than the shape a life takes when it accepts a frame. Structure checks Rival and feeds Support, which the manuals compress into 官印相生: rules that hold keep competitors in line and bring backing with them.
Among the Ten Gods, Structure checks Rival and feeds Support; it is checked by Edge and fed by Steady Wealth. These follow from the same element cycles, in the same polarity, and hold for every Day Master.
How is Structure worked out?
Start from your Day Master’s element and find the element that controls it in the controlling cycle. That element has a yang stem and a yin stem. The one whose polarity is opposite to your Day Master’s is Structure; the other is Pressure.
| Day Master element | Structure element |
|---|---|
| Wood (木) | Metal (金) |
| Fire (火) | Water (水) |
| Earth (土) | Wood (木) |
| Metal (金) | Fire (火) |
| Water (水) | Earth (土) |
Count along the ten stems from the Day Master, counting it as the first, and Structure is the eighth stem for a yang Day Master but the sixth for a yin one. The stems alternate yang and yin, so a stem of the opposite polarity has no fixed distance.
Which stem is Structure for each Day Master?
| Day Master | Structure stem | Count | Hidden in branches |
|---|---|---|---|
| 甲 (Jiǎ, Yang Wood) | 辛 (Xīn, Yin Metal) | eighth | 酉 main qi, 戌 middle qi, 丑 residual qi |
| 乙 (Yǐ, Yin Wood) | 庚 (Gēng, Yang Metal) | sixth | 申 main qi, 巳 middle qi |
| 丙 (Bǐng, Yang Fire) | 癸 (Guǐ, Yin Water) | eighth | 子 main qi, 丑 middle qi, 辰 residual qi |
| 丁 (Dīng, Yin Fire) | 壬 (Rén, Yang Water) | sixth | 亥 main qi, 申 middle qi |
| 戊 (Wù, Yang Earth) | 乙 (Yǐ, Yin Wood) | eighth | 卯 main qi, 辰 middle qi, 未 residual qi |
| 己 (Jǐ, Yin Earth) | 甲 (Jiǎ, Yang Wood) | sixth | 寅 main qi, 亥 middle qi |
| 庚 (Gēng, Yang Metal) | 丁 (Dīng, Yin Fire) | eighth | 午 main qi, 未 middle qi, 戌 residual qi |
| 辛 (Xīn, Yin Metal) | 丙 (Bǐng, Yang Fire) | sixth | 巳 main qi, 寅 middle qi |
| 壬 (Rén, Yang Water) | 己 (Jǐ, Yin Earth) | eighth | 丑 main qi, 未 main qi, 午 middle qi |
| 癸 (Guǐ, Yin Water) | 戊 (Wù, Yang Earth) | sixth | 辰 main qi, 戌 main qi, 寅 residual qi, 巳 residual qi, 申 residual qi |
A Ten God shows up in two places: as a visible stem on top of a pillar, and as a hidden stem stored inside a branch. The last column lists every branch that stores this stem and at which layer; the main qi counts for most. Hidden-stem tables follow our published conventions.
What does Structure look like in a real chart?
Take the chart we publish for Coco Chanel (1883–1971), cast by the same engine from the recorded birth time. The Day Master is 乙 (Yǐ, Yin Wood). Structure appears 3 times: the month stem, 庚 (Gēng, Yang Metal); 庚 (Gēng, Yang Metal) hidden in the month branch 申, as its main qi; 庚 (Gēng, Yang Metal) hidden in the hour branch 申, as its main qi. Against a Yin Wood Day Master, 庚 (Yang Metal) reads as Structure: Metal controls Wood, one yang and one yin.
| Year | Month | Day | Hour | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 癸 · Insight | 庚 · Structure | 乙 · Day Master | 甲 · Rival |
| Branch · hidden | 未己 Windfall丁 Output乙 Peer | 申庚 Structure壬 Support戊 Steady Wealth | 未己 Windfall丁 Output乙 Peer | 申庚 Structure壬 Support戊 Steady Wealth |
Where the birth time comes from, and how strong that source is, is set out on the Coco Chanel case page. Finding Structure in a well-known chart explains nothing about why the person became known; each case page has a section on where the chart does not fit the life.
How do you read Structure?
There is a kind of person who does better with a deadline than without one, and who is quietly relieved when an institution says what is expected. They are not timid. The frame lets them spend their attention on the work instead of on inventing the rules. Structure is the chart’s word for that consented constraint, and it is easy to read too much into. A prominent Structure is not a promise of rank, and a chart without one is not a prediction of chaos. What it describes is how a person tends to meet rules, and the texts are frank that a rule can hold you up or hold you down. Which of the two it does for you, the chart cannot say. A useful place to look is the last time you left somewhere with fewer rules. Did you feel lighter, or unmoored?
Structure and the other nine
Its pair is Pressure: the same element relation, the other polarity. The full set, in order:
Peer · Rival · Output · Edge · Windfall · Steady Wealth · Pressure · Structure · Insight · Support
All ten on one page: the Ten Gods. The reference point they are all measured from: the Day Master. To see where Structure sits in your own chart, use the free BaZi calculator — no account needed. Auspice is for reflection, not prediction.
