Insight — literally Indirect Resource (偏印, piān yìn) — is the Ten God for the element that produces your Day Master, in the same polarity. For a 甲 Day Master it is 壬 (Rén, Yang Water).
What nourishes you, obliquely: unconventional intelligence — quick to pick things up, prone to going down rabbit holes.
Every Ten God is defined relative to the Day Master, the stem of your day of birth — that page explains the reference point; this one goes deeper on a single relation. The tables and the example below are computed at build time by the engine behind our free BaZi calculator, not written by hand.
Why is it called Indirect Resource?
印 is a seal — the official’s seal that proved someone in authority stood behind you — and Resource is the element that produces yours. 偏 marks the same-polarity form: for a 甲 day, 壬. An older name for it is 枭, the owl, from the phrase 枭神夺食, the owl snatching the food: Insight checks Output, in the same polarity. The literal Indirect Resource is flat in English. We call it Insight after what the classical readings attribute to it: learning that comes in sideways, quick to take hold and inclined to go deep in directions nobody planned.
Among the Ten Gods, Insight checks Output and feeds Peer; it is checked by Windfall and fed by Pressure. These follow from the same element cycles, in the same polarity, and hold for every Day Master.
How is Insight worked out?
Start from your Day Master’s element and find the element that produces it in the generating cycle. That element has a yang stem and a yin stem. The one whose polarity matches your Day Master’s is Insight; the other is Support.
| Day Master element | Insight element |

| Wood (木) | Water (水) |
| Fire (火) | Wood (木) |
| Earth (土) | Fire (火) |
| Metal (金) | Earth (土) |
| Water (水) | Metal (金) |
Count along the ten stems from the Day Master, counting it as the first, and Insight is always the ninth stem, whichever Day Master you start from.
Which stem is Insight for each Day Master?
| Day Master | Insight stem | Count | Hidden in branches |
|---|---|---|---|
| 甲 (Jiǎ, Yang Wood) | 壬 (Rén, Yang Water) | ninth | 亥 main qi, 申 middle qi |
| 乙 (Yǐ, Yin Wood) | 癸 (Guǐ, Yin Water) | ninth | 子 main qi, 丑 middle qi, 辰 residual qi |
| 丙 (Bǐng, Yang Fire) | 甲 (Jiǎ, Yang Wood) | ninth | 寅 main qi, 亥 middle qi |
| 丁 (Dīng, Yin Fire) | 乙 (Yǐ, Yin Wood) | ninth | 卯 main qi, 辰 middle qi, 未 residual qi |
| 戊 (Wù, Yang Earth) | 丙 (Bǐng, Yang Fire) | ninth | 巳 main qi, 寅 middle qi |
| 己 (Jǐ, Yin Earth) | 丁 (Dīng, Yin Fire) | ninth | 午 main qi, 未 middle qi, 戌 residual qi |
| 庚 (Gēng, Yang Metal) | 戊 (Wù, Yang Earth) | ninth | 辰 main qi, 戌 main qi, 寅 residual qi, 巳 residual qi, 申 residual qi |
| 辛 (Xīn, Yin Metal) | 己 (Jǐ, Yin Earth) | ninth | 丑 main qi, 未 main qi, 午 middle qi |

A Ten God shows up in two places: as a visible stem on top of a pillar, and as a hidden stem stored inside a branch. The last column lists every branch that stores this stem and at which layer; the main qi counts for most. Hidden-stem tables follow our published conventions.
What does Insight look like in a real chart?
Take the chart we publish for Albert Einstein (1879–1955), cast by the same engine from the recorded birth time. The Day Master is 丙 (Bǐng, Yang Fire). Insight appears once: the hour stem, 甲 (Jiǎ, Yang Wood). Against a Yang Fire Day Master, 甲 (Yang Wood) reads as Insight: Wood produces Fire, both yang.
| Year | Month | Day | Hour | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 己 · Edge | 丁 · Rival | 丙 · Day Master | 甲 · Insight |
| Branch · hidden | 卯乙 Support | 卯乙 Support | 申庚 Windfall壬 Pressure戊 Output | 午丁 Rival己 Edge |
Where the birth time comes from, and how strong that source is, is set out on the Albert Einstein case page. Finding Insight in a well-known chart explains nothing about why the person became known; each case page has a section on where the chart does not fit the life.
How do you read Insight?
Some people learn most from sources nobody assigned: a book found by accident, a subject that swallowed a year. They are often quick, and often hard to explain on a CV. Insight names that kind of nourishment, oblique rather than institutional. The old name, the owl, carries the other half: a mind fed this way can grow so absorbed in understanding that it stops producing. That is a tendency, not a sentence, and many people with a strong Insight make a great deal. The chart can mark the tension; it cannot tell you which side of it you are on this year. Worth checking: of the things you studied most closely in the last twelve months, how many did you turn into something another person could use?
Insight and the other nine
Its pair is Support: the same element relation, the other polarity. The full set, in order:
Peer · Rival · Output · Edge · Windfall · Steady Wealth · Pressure · Structure · Insight · Support
All ten on one page: the Ten Gods. The reference point they are all measured from: the Day Master. To see where Insight sits in your own chart, use the free BaZi calculator — no account needed. Auspice is for reflection, not prediction.
