Geng Wu (庚午) is one of the sixty day pillars of Chinese astrology: Yang Metal standing on the Horse branch, nayin Roadside Earth. Its traditional image is The Blade in the Furnace — Pressure is the whetstone — the hotter it burns, the sharper it gets.

Hidden stems are the stems stored inside the branch, each read as a Ten-God relation to the day stem. Why is 庚午 “The Blade in the Furnace”?

Gēng (庚) is yang Metal — raw, unpolished, the axe-head rather than the jewel. Wǔ (午) is the Fire branch, noon on the day's clock, the hottest seat in the cycle. Metal sitting directly on the fire that melts it is not a comfortable arrangement, and that is the whole picture: a blade is not born sharp. It is burned sharp. Hence the title this pillar carries — The Blade in the Furnace (炉中利刃).

What is a Geng Wu person like?

Watch this person in the week everything goes wrong. They get calmer, quicker, more exact — the deadline that freezes the room is the thing that finally brings them to an edge. So the pressure is built into the pillar together with its own support: the furnace that burns the blade is also the furnace that tempers it.
