How is the luck pillar starting age calculated?

Count from the birth moment to the nearest sectional solar term (节) — forward for a male born in a yang year or a female in a yin year, backward otherwise — and convert the distance: three days make one year, one day makes four months, one double-hour makes ten days. That number is the age at which your first luck pillar (大运) begins.

Step 1 — Which direction?

The year stem is yang (甲 丙 戊 庚 壬) or yin (乙 丁 己 辛 癸). Yang-year male and yin-year female charts run forward: the luck pillars follow the month pillar in sequence, and the count goes to the next term. Yin-year male and yang-year female charts run backward: pillars precede the month pillar, and the count goes back to the previous term. Only the eight sectional terms that open a month (立春, 惊蛰, 清明 … 小寒) count — the mid-month terms (雨水, 春分 …) do not.

Step 2 — Measure the distance

Measure from the true-solar-time birth moment (see why the clock is corrected first) to the exact instant of the term, which is an astronomical timestamp, not a date. Write the distance as days, hours and minutes.

Step 3 — Convert: 3 days = 1 year

A luck pillar governs ten years; a solar month lasts about thirty days. The month is scaled onto the pillar, 30 days → 10 years, which gives the whole table: 3 days → 1 year, 1 day → 4 months, 1 double-hour (one twelfth of a day) → 10 days. We round the remainder down to whole double-hours, so a start date lands on a whole ten-day period — the version that can be reproduced by hand from the classical texts. Some tools instead convert by the minute; the difference is discussed below.

Worked example — A boy born 15 July 1990, 2:30 pm, Vancouver

  1. True solar time: 13:11 (-78 min from the clock). Four pillars 庚午 癸未 辛巳 乙未.
  2. Year stem is yang; male → count forward to 立秋 at 1990-08-08 02:45.
  3. Distance: 23 days 13 h 34 min.
  4. Convert: 23 days = 7 years (21 days) + 2 days = 8 months; 13 h 34 min = 6 whole double-hours = 60 days = 2 months 0 days. Total 7 years 10 months 0 days.
  5. Engine result: 7y 10m 0d → first luck pillar 甲申 from 1998-05-15 (age 9 by traditional count).

Worked example — A girl born the same minute, same place

  1. True solar time: 13:11 (-78 min from the clock). Four pillars 庚午 癸未 辛巳 乙未.
  2. Year stem is yang; female → count backward to 小暑 at 1990-07-07 17:00.
  3. Distance: 7 days 20 h 11 min.
  4. Convert: 7 days = 2 years (6 days) + 1 day = 4 months; 20 h 11 min = 10 whole double-hours = 100 days = 3 months 10 days. Total 2 years 7 months 10 days.
  5. Engine result: 2y 7m 10d → first luck pillar 壬午 from 1993-02-25 (age 4 by traditional count).

Same minute, same place, and the two children start their luck pillars 5 years apart, walking in opposite directions from the month pillar 癸未: 甲申 forward for him, 壬午 backward for her. That is the whole effect of gender on a BaZi chart — it changes nothing in the four pillars, only which way the decades unfold.

Why do calculators give different starting ages?

Three reasons, in order of size. Rounding. We round to the double-hour and land on a ten-day period; other tools convert by the minute and report the start to the hour. In a 4,000-chart comparison of the two methods the pillar sequences agreed every time, the start dayagreed only 9% of the time, the median gap was 3 days and the largest about 15, and in about 1% of charts one pillar’s start year moved by one. True solar time. A tool that skips the correction measures from the wrong instant — up to a few hours off, enough to move the count by a day, i.e. four months. Term instants.A tool that counts from the clock date instead of the term’s exact timestamp is off by up to a day as well. None of these changes which pillars you get, only when they begin.

How much does the starting age matter?

Less than the sequence. The pillars themselves come from the month pillar and the direction; the starting age only says where the ten-year boundaries fall, and every method above agrees to within a year. If a boundary lands within a year of the date you are asking about, read both pillars rather than trust either — the same rule we apply to an hour pillar near a two-hour boundary.
