What are void branches (空亡)?

Where the emptiness comes from: ten stems, twelve branches

The sexagenary cycle pairs ten Heavenly Stems with twelve Earthly Branches. Ten and twelve do not divide evenly, and that arithmetic is the whole of it: run the stems from 甲 to 癸 and you have used ten branches, leaving two branches with no stem to stand under. Those two are the void branches — 空亡, kōng wáng — of that ten-day period, called a 旬 (xún).

Sixty pairs divide into six such periods. Each has its own pair of leftovers, and every pillar in a chart belongs to one of them. Nothing is estimated here. Given a pillar, its void pair is a lookup, and two practitioners who disagree about everything else will still write down the same two branches.

That is worth saying plainly, because "empty" sounds like a verdict and it is not one. It is a position in a calendar.

How to find yours

Take the pillar you are testing — most often the day pillar. Count how far its branch sits ahead of its stem in their respective cycles; the two branches that fall past the end of the run are the void pair. A 甲子 day, for example, runs 甲子 乙丑 丙寅 … 癸酉, exhausting the stems at 酉 and leaving 戌 and 亥 empty.

In practice you read it off the table below rather than counting. Our calculator marks the void branches on the chart directly, so you do not have to.

One convention worth stating, because software differs: each pillar is looked up by its own stem-branch pair, and when we say a branch "falls void" we are comparing the other three pillars against the day pillar's period. That matches mainstream charting software. Where a source uses the year pillar as the reference instead, its answers will differ — not because one is wrong, but because they are answering with different conventions.

What a void branch is taken to mean — and how far that claim goes

The traditional reading is that a branch sitting in the void is dampened rather than deleted. Whatever it governs is said to be present but harder to hold: the substance is there and does not quite convert. Classical texts extend this by pillar — emptiness in the year pillar read toward early environment, in the month toward career footing, in the day toward partnership, in the hour toward later years and children.

Here is the part most pages leave out. The calculation is deterministic; this interpretive layer is not. Void branches belong to the 神煞 (shénshà) category — the symbolic-star layer — which sits below the structural reading of a chart in almost every serious lineage. Strength of the Day Master, the Ten Gods, the interactions between branches: those come first. A void branch adjusts a reading at the margin. It does not overturn one.

We treat it that way in our own readings, and we would rather say so than let a striking word do work it has not earned. If you have read elsewhere that a void year pillar means a difficult childhood, you have read a claim stated with more confidence than the tradition itself supports.

Can it be cancelled?

Several conventions say yes, under conditions: a void branch that is clashed (冲) or combined (合) by another branch is often held to be "filled" or activated, its emptiness lifted. Others hold that a clash on an empty branch deepens the emptiness rather than resolving it.

Both positions have textual support, and they contradict each other. When a source presents one of them as the rule, it has chosen a lineage without telling you. We flag the condition when it appears in your chart and name the disagreement rather than resolving it by fiat.

Is a void branch bad?

No — and the question itself imports an assumption the mechanism does not carry. Emptiness is not misfortune. It describes a weakened attachment between a branch and what it would otherwise anchor.

There are readings in which emptiness is welcome. A branch carrying something the chart has too much of, or an element actively working against the Day Master, is not a loss when its grip loosens. Whether a void helps or hinders depends on what that branch was doing in the first place, which is a question about the whole chart and not about the void.
